2009 Regular Season

11/01/09 vs Scituate

4th Grade Ends Season Against Scituate

With a playoff spot on the line, this team came prepared to fight to the end on Sunday at HHS against Scituate. Scituate won the toss and Tyler Murphy, Shane Bick, Charlie Wichern, Alex Dietrich and Nick Beal lined up to stop any on-coming traffic. Shane Bick, Tyler Murphy, Jack Maude, Michael Freeman and Eric Rubino all took turns tackling. Shane Bick’s tackle caused a Scituate fumble and subsequent Hingham recovery. On offense, Shane Bick, Charlie Wichern, Michael Freeman, Zach Devine (C), Richard Miller (QB), Nathaniel Bosnian and Alex Dietrich stood poised to do whatever it took to win this game. Gains by Peyton Crosby, Eric Rubino, Spencer Cassell and Kevin fell short of a 1st down and the 1st quarter ended scoreless.
Peyton Crosby, Eric Rubino, Spencer Cassell, and Kevin Shea attempted again to score in the 2nd quarter. Highlights included a 15 yard facemask penalty on Scituate against Rubino, a superb QB sneak by Richie Miller and a stupendous 15 yard drive by Eric Rubino. However, Scituate regained the ball and on their very first play of the possession drove in for 6 points and the conversion. Scituate’s kick to Hingham went much farther than anticipated and set Hingham way back in their own territory to start their possession. Attempts by Rubino and Crosby to gain yards were fruitless and Scituate took over deep in Hingham territory. Michael Freeman, Nick Beal, Peyton Crosby, Nathaniel Bosnian, Alex Dietrich, Zach Devine and Shane Bick readied the line. Everybody on the team contributed tackles including Cassell, Freeman, and Nick, Beal. But it was Eric Rubino who saved the day when he wrapped up a loose Shark narrowing in on the goal line with only seconds remaining in the first half.
Scituate kicked to Hingham to begin the second half of the game. Nick Beal received the kick. Despite gallant attempts by Cassell and Crosby to add yards to the board, and excellent blocking by Shane Bick, Scituate took over.   Tackles again by the Hingham defense, notably Dietrich and Rubino, took the ball back for Hingham. The ball traded hands a couple more times to end the 3rd quarter without any points added for either team.
Scituate held onto the ball to start the 4th quarter and despite an illegal procedure penalty, managed to drive in for another TD. Eric Rubino blocked the 2pt conversion attempt. Rubino received the kick from Scituate. Attempts by Shea and Cassell to put some distance on the ball was blocked and the defense took over again. The team combined many times to tackle and Shane Bick’s tackle could be heard in the next town over. Hingham now had one last chance to even the score once the 2 minute warning was handed out. Rubino and Cassell both tried to run the ball. A 20 yard completed pass to Michael Freeman gave the team the hope they needed. Eric Rubino added his own 20 yard contribution. Despite great blocking, Hingham had to relinquish the ball one last time and Scituate spent the last 1:06 running down the clock. The final score was Scituate 14, Hingham 0.
Once again a HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all of the coaching staff for their unwavering support of the players: Coaches Sean Cavanaugh, John Battaglia, David Littlefield, Jim Passios, Rick Vidal, and Nick Passios. And also to the players for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. And another big thank you goes out to the team moms: Marcella Rubino and Mary Cassell , and all of the other (un-sung heroes) parents who supported the team in many, many different ways throughout the season whether in the concession or on the field holding the chains or behind the scenes.

10/31/09 vs Marshfield

4th Grade Mashes Marshfield

Eric Rubino, Graham Bates, Alex Vidal and Charlie Wichern represented the team on Halloween against Marshfield at Lynch Field in Hingham. Kevin Shea received the kick-off to start the game. Representing the offensive line was Alex Vidal, Zack Passios, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek (C), Joe Cavanaugh (QB), Wilson MacPherson, Graham Bates and Alex Dietrich. In all, the first half of the game would end up having only 4 possessions; 2 by Hingham and two by Marshfield. The first Hingham possession, which resulted in a TD by Maxwell Schneider, saw continuous incremental gains by Jett Littlefield, Maxwell Schneider, Jack Maude and Kevin Shea. A flawlessly executed pass from QB Joe Cavanaugh to Alex Dietrich in the end zone was good for the 2pt conversion. On defense, Kevin McGovern, Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Charlie Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson and Jack Maude lined up to protect their house. Tackles by Wilson MacPherson, Jett Littlefield, Alex Vidal, Kevin Shea, Nick Schofield, Maxwell Schneider and a pass smack-down by Graham Bates kept Marshfield scoreless. On Hingham’s second possession, Kevin Shea, Jett Littlefield, Jack Maude and Maxwell Schneider all took turns running with the ball. A textbook pass from Joe Cavanaugh to Alex Dietrich was good for 10 yards and a 1st down. And with the 2 minute warning just having been announced, a hand-off to Maxwell Schneider was good for his 2nd TD of the game, bringing the score to Hingham 14, Marshfield 0. Marshfield’s last attempt to score in the first half of the game was thwarted by tackles from Kevin Shea, Zach Passios, Kevin McGovern and a beautiful pass block by Jett Littlefield.
The second half of the game began as remarkable as the 1st half had ended when Graham Bates kicked to Marshfield and Hingham’s own Jack Maude recovered the ball. Unfortunately Hingham couldn’t capitalize on this play and turned the ball over to Marshfield. On Marshfield’s possession, tackles by Zach Passios, Kevin Shea, Jett Littlefield and Graham Bates kept Marshfield at a stand-still. A QB sack by Kevin Shea was notable as well as a tackle by Kevin McGovern which forced a Marshfield fumble that Hingham quickly pounced on. Passios, Littlefield and Bates once again took turns carrying the ball for Hingham on offense. On defense, Schneider, Jack Wanty, Kevin Shea and Jett Littlefield took the ball back. With 2 minutes remaining in the game, Hingham opted for a little insurance when Jett Littlefield ran the ball into the end zone for the 3rd touchdown of the game. Maxwell Schneider kicked to Marshfield, and even though the odds were good for Hingham, Littlefield, Bates and Tyler Murphy tackled as if the game was on the line and Alex Dietrich wrapped the gift with a QB sack to end the game Hingham 20, Marshfield 0.

10/25/09 Hingham vs Middleborough

Hingham 4th Grade Tackle Misses Mark against Middleborough

Will Hlidek, Zach Devine, and Michael Donius represented the team as co-captains at the HHS on Sunday 10/25 against Middleborough. Hingham chose to receive the ball; however Middleborough got to the ball first and took over on offense. This unfortunate event turned out to be the catalyst for Middleborough’s first touchdown of the game. Michael Freeman, Peyton Crosby, Shane Bick, Zach Devine (C), Richard Miller (QB), Nathaniel Bosnian, Nick Beal and Alex Dietrich set up on the offensive line. Hand-offs to Eric Rubino, Peyton Crosby, Tyler Murphy and Spencer Cassell added incremental yards. But it was Spencer Cassell’s 12 yard drive up the middle that was good for a Hingham 1st down. However, Hingham was unable to convert to end the 1st quarter. On defense, tackles by Peyton Crosby and Eric Rubino alongside a QB sack and 6 yard loss by Joe Cavanaugh were only a hiccup for Middleborough who found a hole and another TD, making the score Middleborough 14, Hingham 0. Middleborough then kicked to Richard Miller to start Hingham’s long drive toward the Middleborough end zone. Eric Rubino, Spencer Cassell and Kevin Shea took turns driving toward the end zone. But it was Cassell’s 20 yard drive that put Hingham into position for the TD pass from Miller to Beal in the end zone. A picture perfect pitch from Miller to Freeman was good for the extra 2 points. The kick to Middleborough by Maxwell Schneider was recovered by Hingham’s own Nathaniel Bosnian. Hand-offs to Spencer Cassell and Eric Rubino were promising. QB Richard Miller then ran for a first down when he was unable to find a receiver.   However, Middleborough intercepted the next pass attempt to end the first half.
Maxwell Schneider kicked to start the second half of the game. Alex Devine, Michael Freeman, Joe Cavanaugh, Nick Beal, Nathaniel Bosnian and Shane Bick lined up on defense. Tackles by Shane Bick, Eric Rubino, Alex Devine, and Tyler Murphy forced a turn-over. Unfortunately, Hingham fumbled on their next possession and Middleborough took the ball back. Shane Bick commanded on defense with multiple tackles; Spencer Cassell tackled with authority; and Nathaniel Bosnian stood strong on the line to hold Middleborough to end the third quarter. Middleborough continued to creep up the field despite tackles by Bick, Cassell, Devine, Crosby and Nick Beal. On Hingham’s last possession, Tyler Murphy and Eric Rubino gave it their best shot but it was not enough to pull off a win.

10/24/09 Hingham vs Silver Lake

4th Grade Tackle Football Whips the Warriors 6-0

Charlie Wichern, Maxwell Schneider, Zach Passios and Jett Littlefield represented the team as co-captains Saturday 10/24 at Lynch Field against Silver Lake. Zach Passios received the kick-off. Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek (center), Joe Cavanaugh (QB), Wilson MacPherson, Alex Dietrich, and Kevin Shea took their place on the offensive line. A hand-off to Maxwell Schneider was good for 10 yards. Additional hand-offs to Zach Passios, Jett Littlefield and Kevin Shea and a reverse to Schneider were not enough to keep the ball. On defense, Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Wilson MacPherson and Kevin McGovern braced on the line. Kevin Shea was good for more than his share of tackles along with Zach Passios and Wilson MacPherson. Hingham took over on downs. On their next possession, hand-offs to Kevin Shea, Zach Passios, and Maxwell Schneider followed by an incomplete pass attempt gave Silver Lake the ball right back. Kevin Shea was explosive on defense and shot off the line like a bullet to tackle warriors. Schneider and Shea combined to drag down their opponents and Kevin McGovern took his turn tackling as well. Ritchie Miller shot down a pass attempt to stop the warriors from advancing. The Raiders and the Warriors shared the ball back and forth for the remainder of the first half culminating in a QB sack by Wilson MacPherson and a series of Schneider/Passios tackles.
Maxwell Schneider kicked to Silver Lake to start the second half of the scoreless game.  Hingham’s own Jett Littlefield recovered the ball to set up the one and only touchdown of the game by Kevin Shea. And against all odds, Schneider kicked again to Silver Lake only to have Hingham’s own Kevin Shea recover the ball this time. Unfortunately Hingham was unable to convert on this stroke of luck despite great attempts by Shea, Schneider and Passios to carry the ball. Kevin Shea decided to up the ante by focusing exclusively on tackling in the backfield and Zach Passios’ fast hands clobbered down a Silver Lake pass attempt to take the ball back. Once again Shea demonstrated his agility by weaving in and out of warriors. On defense, Shea, Schneider, MacPherson, Zach Devine, Ritchie Miller and Alex Vidal punished the Warriors. On Hingham’s last possession of the game, Shea, Passios, and Schneider all tried one last time unsuccessfully to add to the scoreboard. Zach Passios cinched the win when he intercepted the last pass attempt by Silver Lake.

10/17/09 Hingham vs Norwell

4th Grade JV Falls To Norwell

On a cold morning last Saturday, the Hingham 4th grade JV Red Raiders lost 14-0 to the Norwell Schooners. The Schooners set sail with a deceptive offense that kept the Red Raiders on their heels all morning.
Game captains Jack Wanty, Will Hilidek, and Wilson MacPherson won the toss and elected to receive the ball. Jack Maude returned the kick for the Red Raiders. On the first play from scrimmage, QB Joe Cavanaugh handed the ball to tailback Kevin Shea who handed it to Max Schneider who ran around the corner for a big gain. From there Jack Maude pounded the middle and Kevin Shea swept wide and Hingham had another first. Hingham stalled there and Norwell took over on downs.
The power of Norwell’s running game was quickly evident. Tackles by Graham Bates, Kevin Shea, Alex Diedrich, and Jack Maude slowed the Schooners’ progress, but eventually a back busted through for a long touchdown run. Norwell converted for two as the ball carrier scampered into the end zone despite losing a shoe on the way.
On Hingham’s next series, facing 4th and 11, Kevin Shea fought hard for 10 yards just missing a first down. Solid tackles by Shea and Michael Donius held Norwell in check and Hingham got the ball back when Zack Passios recovered a fumble, only to return the favor on the next play. On the last play of the half, Donius and Shea teamed up to keep Norwell out of the end zone by bringing a receiver down at the five yard line after a completion.
Graham Bates kicked off for Hingham to open the 2nd half. Norwell went on a sustained drive, eating up most of the 2nd half. Charlie Wichern, Zack Passios, Kevin Shea, Kevin McGovern, and Jack Maude all registered tackles to slow the Norwell attack, but the Schooners on this day were too strong, eventually winning 14-0.

10/17/09 vs Marshfield

4th Grade Tackle Football vs Marshfield

Spencer Cassell, Shane Bick, and Zach Devine represented the Hingham Raiders Saturday night under the lights in Marshfield. Hingham opted to receive the kickoff and Nick Beal started the game with the catch. A series of alternating handoffs to Tyler Murphy and Spencer Cassell made for a good run but ultimately led to a turnover. On defense Tyler Murphy, Alex Dietrich, Nathaniel Bosnian, Charlie Wichern, Shane Bick and Nick Beal stood poised for action. Zach Devine, Alex Dietrich and Nick Beal  combined to drag down one Ram after another. Hingham regained possession. Michael Freeman, Jack Maude, Shane Bick, Zach Devine (center), Joe Cavanaugh (QB), Nathaniel Bosnian, Charlie Wichern and Nick Beal took center stage on offense. Tyler Murphy impressed all as he bobbed and weaved through a line of Rams for a gain of 20 yards. Handoffs to Eric Rubino, Spencer Cassell, and Kevin Shea would not be enough. Hingham had to hand the ball back to end the 1st quarter with both teams scoreless.
In the second quarter Michael Freeman on defense was impressive. Tackles by Nick Beal, Kevin McGovern, Shane Bick, Michael Donius, and Eric Rubino were impactful. The ball flipped flopped from team to team with no points scored the end the first half.
Michael Freeman kicked to start the 3rd quarter. Shane Bick contributed one tackle before Marshfield broke through to score the first touchdown of the game. The 2pt conversion was unsuccessful. Tyler Murphy received the Ram’s kick. Spencer Cassell rolled and plowed several times through the middle of the Ram defense and it seemed to be all about him and Eric Rubino this possession. Then a magnificent 3-back pass was followed by a touchdown from Eric Rubino to even the score with 3:54 left in the 3rd quarter. Michael Freeman kicked to the Rams and within a matter of moments the Rams  had scored their second TD. Zach Devine successfully blocked the 2pt conversion. On Hingham’s next possession Tyler Murphy made the only headway for Hingham only to be followed by a tragic fumble which resulted in them losing the ball to the Rams. Tackles by Charlie Wichern and Rubino ended the 3rd Quarter.
The fourth quarter saw additional tackles by Shane Bick, Tyler Murphy and Nick Beal. Andrew Rubino smacked down a Ram’s pass attempt. Hingham took the ball back. On offense, with 3:53 remaining in the game, Hingham came on strong. Tyler Murphy, Spencer Cassell and Eric Rubino took turns driving up the field. But Hingham couldn’t make the score and the game ended with Marshfield taking the win 12 to 6.

10/10/09 Hingham vs Plymouth

HINGHAM 4TH GRADE TROUNCES PLYMOUTH

Eric Rubino, Charlie Wichern and Nathaniel Bosnian represented the team as co-captains under the lights at Lynch field on Saturday night10/10. Michael Freeman began the game with a kick to the Jaguars but it was Hingham’s Spencer Cassell that recovered the ball. Unfortunately Hingham couldn’t hold onto the ball and gave it back to Plymouth on their 10 yard line. Tackles by Nick Devine and Nick Beal along with several “team” tackles recovered the ball for Hingham. A toss to Tyler Murphy and hand-offs to Peyton Crosby, Eric Rubino, Tyler Murphy and a 30 yard drive by Spencer Cassell brought Hingham back to Plymouth’s 1 yard line to end of the 1st quarter.
On the very next play Peyton Crosby successfully completed the TD drive for 6 points and QB Richard Miller drove for the 2pt conversion to bring the score to Hingham 8, Plymouth 0. Michael Freeman kicked to Plymouth on their 30 yard line. Tackles by Cassell, Shane Bick, Nick Devine, Eric Rubino and Peyton Crosby prevented Plymouth from making any headway. Rubino was instrumental in stopping a potential Plymouth break-away. Peyton Crosby, Shane Bick, Jack Maude and Zach Devine all sacked the QB. Spencer Cassell was successful in stopping a Plymouth bulldozer from driving up the middle. Plymouth relinquished the ball to Hingham once again. With 32 seconds remaining in the 1st half a handoff to Spencer Cassell was good for 20 yards and another handoff to Eric Rubino added another 40 yards and put QB Richard Miller in perfect scoring position to run in the TD on the next play. Tyler Murphy followed up with the 2 pt conversion and brought the score to Hingham 16, Plymouth 0 to end the half.
The 3rd quarter started off on the Hingham 25 yard line when Nick Beal received the kick-off. Hand-offs to Eric Rubino, Peyton Crosby, Spencer Cassell and a toss to Tyler Murphy were all in vain after Plymouth recovered a Hingham fumble and drove for the 6 points and the conversion bringing the score to Hingham 16, Plymouth 8. Eric Rubino received the next kick-off on the Hingham 35 yard line. Runs by Spencer Cassell, Tyler Murphy and QB Richard Miller were not enough for a 1st down. Plymouth received the ball with 1:18 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Shane Bick stuffed the QB on the next play to end the 3rd quarter.
The 4th quarter began just as the 3rd quarter had ended with Bick stuffing the QB again and a Plymouth turn-over. Hingham’s next and last possession was jam-packed with first downs and carries by Peyton Crosby, Spencer Cassell and Tyler Murphy. Plymouth took over the ball with 24 seconds remaining in the game but did not even come close to scoring before the whistle blew. Hingham won the game with 16 points to Plymouth’s 8 points.

10/10/09 Hingham vs Rockland

HINGHAM 4TH GRADE RILES ROCKLAND

The real story here is that this team has not been scored against in over a month. And this game was no different. Alex Diedrich, Kevin Shea and Nick Schofield represented the team as co-captains against Rockland at Lynch Field on Saturday morning 10/10. Hingham chose to receive the ball and Kevin Shea started the crusade by receiving the kick-off and pushing for 20 yards. On the offensive line were Nick Schofield, Michael Donius, Zach Passios, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson, Graham Bates, and Kevin Shea. A series of charges by the duo of Jett Littlefield and Jack Maude alongside a spectacular pass by Joe Cavanaugh to Michael Donius was capped off by the first of two TD runs by Jett Littlefield. Kevin Shea topped the TD with a 2pt conversion bringing the score to Hingham 8, Rockland 0. Graham Bates kicked the ball to Rockland who picked it up in the nick of time just as our own Zach Passios raced to recover the kick. Michael Donius, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson, Nick Schofield, and Kevin McGovern posed on the defensive line. Kevin Shea, Wilson MacPherson, and Jett Littlefield were instrumental in getting the ball back to Hingham. On Hingham’s next possession, Maxwell Schneider, Jack Maude, Jett Littlefield, and Kevin Shea carried the ball together with an impressive reverse from Shea to Schneider.  On Rockland’s last possession in the half, Graham Bates, Alex Vidal and Kevin McGovern helped to keep Rockland scoreless.
Graham Bates kicked to start the second half of the game. Tackles by Maxwell Schneider, Michael Donius, Wilson MacPherson, and Jack Maude led to a loss of yards for Rockland and a turnover to Hingham. On Hingham’s next possession, Jett Littlefield bobbed and weaved through the Rockland defense to gain 15 yards. Schneider’s 2 carries added 6 yards and Littlefield couldn’t be dragged down as he pulled off another 1st down. Maude and Littlefield then set up Kevin Shea for another TD which was immediately called back because Hingham had too many people on the field. Hingham was unable to repeat the performance despite a stunning defensive performance by Zach Devine and turned the ball over to Rockland. On defense, Maude and Shea united to tackle, a “noisy” QB sack by Zach Passios, and a trip by Michael Donius left Rockland fighting to maintain their position. Then a series of fumbles by Rockland, although recovered, kept them from a 1st down and forced them to hand the ball back to Hingham. Hingham’s next possession was uneventful, as was Rockland’s as Kevin Shea tossed a Rockland receiver to the ground and Zach Passios caused a fumble which resulted in the next Jett Littlefield TD to end the game.

Hingham vs Hanover

4TH GRADE TACKLE FOOTBALL FIGHTS HARD AGAINST HANOVER 10/03/09

The fourth grade tackle team led by Coach Sean Cavanaugh is getting good at playing in the rain as witnessed Saturday morning at Lynch Field in Hingham. Maxwell Schneider, Michael Donius, and Jett Littlefield represented the team as co-captains. Hingham chose to receive the ball and Maxwell Schneider began the game with the catch and a few yards. Zach Passios, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson, Graham Bates and Michael Donius comprised the offensive line. Hand-offs to Schneider and Jack Maude were good for a few yards but ultimately ended in a fumble and turn-over.   Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson, Kevin McGovern and Jack Maude braced on defense. The team came together to tackle on the next few plays along with Wilson Macpherson’s sack and Jett Littlefield’s tackle to take the ball back for Hingham. The next Hingham possession was led by a series of runs from Jack Maude up the middle and Maxwell Schneider and Kevin Shea on the outside but came up short of scoring. On defense spectacular tackles by Schneider, Graham Bates and Kevin McGovern kept Hanover scoreless. Schneider had an impressive 20 yard carry on Hingham’s next possession and Jack Maude and Jett Littlefield both had a string of runs but again, no score. On defense, with 2 minutes left in the half, the team came together for what seemed to be the longest slow motion tackle on record coupled with tackles from Kevin Shea and Graham Bates. Hingham had one last chance to score before the half and a valiant effort by Schneider and Jack Maude alongside a magnificent reverse from Cavanaugh to Shea to Schneider fell short of scoring.
Graham Bates kicked to start the second half. On the defensive line were Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson, Nick Schofield and Kevin McGovern. Tackles by Jack Wanty, Wilson MacPherson, Nick Schofield and Graham Bates held Hanover motionless. Watching Kevin Shea and Alex Vidal drag down their Hanover opponents was worth standing in the rain for. On offense, handoffs to Zach Passios and Maxwell Schneider looked promising and a recovered fumble by Graham Bates was impressive but the possession ended as quickly as it began. More tackles by Maxwell Schneider and Will Hlidek were followed by 2 rock and roll tackles by Zach Passios which provided the ball back to Hingham. Zach Passios set up a great block for Kevin Shea on his next run. Runs by Eric Rubino, Kevin Shea and Joe Cavanaugh were equally impressive. But alas, still no score. The team set up a series of tackles and Kevin Shea delighted with a super tackle to get the ball back to Hingham. With two minutes remaining in the scoreless game, and on Hingham’s own 10 yard line, Hingham stepped up their game with runs by Graham Bates, Jack Maude, Zach Passios and Spencer Cassell. On defense, tackles provided by Zach Passios and Graham Bates forced Hanover to switch their strategy and try passing. Thankfully the first pass attempt was deflected by Schneider and the next attempt was nearly intercepted by Jet Littlefield. Hingham had one final chance to score with 1:21 remaining in the game and they gave it their best shot. Jett Littlefield ran for 30 yards, Kevin Shea assisted Zach Passios with a great block and Eric Rubino ran for a first down. But the clock ran out leaving Hingham and Hanover scoreless and WET!

Hingham vs Bridgewater 10/04/09

4th GRADE TACKLE FOOTBALL SUCCUMBS TO BRIDGEWATER 10/04/09

The conditions were ripe for a win; great weather, great Bridgewater field, great attitude. Fireball Rubino roused the team with his chatter: “What Time is it?” GAME TIME. “Who are WE”? HINGHAM. The parents and fans were poised for a win. Spencer Cassell, Shane Bick and Zach Devine represented the team as co-captains. Hingham chose to receive the ball to start the game. Peyton Crosby received the kick and drove to the Hingham 43 yard line. Michael Freeman, Shane Bick, Peyton Crosby, center Zach Devine, Nathaniel Bosnian, Charlie Wichern and Nick Beal positioned themselves on the offensive line. Handoffs to Eric Rubino and Tyler Murphy were not effective and a QB sack led to the turnover on Hingham’s 33 yard line.    On defense, Murphy, Nick Beal, Shane Bick, Charlie Wichern, Nathaniel Bosnian, and Michael Freeman braced for the attack. Tackles by Nick Beal, Michael Donius, Spencer Cassell, Zach Devine and Peyton Crosby kept Bridgewater’s gain to a minimum. Michael Freemans’s fumble recover gave Hingham the ball on their own 19 yard line. On offense again, runs by Tyler Murphy, a pass attempt to Nick Beal, and a drive up the middle by Spencer Cassell were not enough and Bridgewater took over on Hingham’s 16 yard line with 1:22 remaining in the 1st quarter. Bridgewater wasted no time in plowing through three Hingham players to score their first touchdown and 2pt conversion of the game. The resulting kick-off to Peyton Crosby brought Hingham to their own 40 yard line. Hand-offs to Spencer Cassell and Kevin Shea were not fruitful and brought about the end of the first quarter.
The beginning of the second quarter looked a little more promising for Hingham. A toss to Peyton Crosby brought Hingham to 4th down and 8. But then a stunning completed 20 yard pass from Miller to Michael Freeman along with the additional 10 yards gained by speedy Freeman seemed just what the team needed to jumpstart Hingham’s game. Hand-offs to Peyton Crosby, Spencer Cassell, and Eric Rubino brought Hingham to Bridgewater’s 23 yard line. A Bridgewater penalty gave Hingham the 1st down at the Badgers 15 yard line. Things were looking up! However, hand-offs to Rubino, Cassell, and Crosby did not advance the ball enough and Bridgewater took over on their own 9 yard line with 2:15 remaining in the 2nd quarter. “Hold Em” could be heard on the Hingham sidelines but apparently Bridgewater was not listening and ran the entire length of the field for their second TD of the game on their next possession. The 2pt conversion was shut down. The ensuing kick-off was caught by Michael Donius who ran to the Hingham 47 yard line with 1:44 remaining in the first half. Once again Hingham went to Cassell and Rubino, normally a slam dunk, only to be shut down by the Badgers again on the 50 yard line. On defense, Donius swatted down a pass attempt and Cassell forced a fumble to end the 1st half of the game. The score was Bridgewater 14, Hingham 0.
Freeman kicked off to Bridgewater to start the 2nd half of the game. Shane Bick and Peyton Crosby SMASHED the Bridgewater receiver on his own 49 yard line and one had to wonder if Hingham had its game back on. On the very next play, Bridgewater broke from the pack and scored another TD, only to be called back to the Hingham 27 yard line for a pushing penalty. Donius, Crosby and Devine continued to tackle on Bridgewater but as if to prove that the TD was theirs to have, they repeated it again. This time it was Donius and Jack Maude that shut down the 2pt conversion. The score was now Bridgewater 20, Hingham 0. Bridgewater kicked to Hingham and Eric Rubino caught the ball and ran for another 10 to the Hingham 47 yard line. A fumble, a QB sack, a dropped lateral pass, and a too-short run attempt handed the ball directly back to Bridgewater on the Hingham 45 yard line with 1:21 remaining in the 3rd quarter.    Again, the Badgers broke free on their next possession and ran for a TD. Once again, it was called back to the Hingham 40 yard line. But to no avail; they wanted what was theirs and just re-ran the same touchdown the very next play. Tyler Murphy was mad now and went after that 2pt conversion attempt like a Raider. The third quarter ended with the score Bridgewater 26, Hingham 0.
A hand-off to Spencer Cassell, a pass attempt/QB sack, and unsuccessful run attempts by Rubino gave Bridgewater the ball on Hingham’s 20 yard line to start the 4th quarter. Thankfully Bridgewater could not convert. On Hingham’s’ next possession hand-offs to Rubino, Cassell, and Murphy were unproductive and Bridgewater got the ball on Hingham’s 10 yard line with 1:50 remaining in the 4th quarter. This opportunity was too good to pass up and Bridgewater once again broke through the Hingham defense and scored another TD bringing the score to Bridgewater 32, Hingham 0. Hingham fought back one more time and with 1:38 left in the game, tried another pass to Freeman and another hand-off to Kevin Shea, but the game was already over.

Hingham Vs Barnstable

Saturday 9/26  4th Grade Tackle Football Beats Barnstable

Jack Wanty, Alex Vidal and Kevin McGovern represented the team as co-captains against Barnstable at Lynch Field in Hingham. Graham Bates received the kick-off.

Will Hlidek as center and Joe Cavanaugh as QB took over the ball on Hingham’s first possession.   Nick Schofield, Alex Vidal, Zach Passios, Jack Wanty, Graham Bates, Wilson MacPherson and Kevin McGovern took charge on the line. A hand-off to Jack Maude for 5 yards was followed up with a hand-off to Jett Littlefield for a 1st down. Another attempt to Jack Maude, followed by Maxwell Schneider, led to the 50 yard TD run by Kevin Shea. Hingham 6, Barnstable 0. Graham Bates kicked to Barnstable. Strong on the defensive line were Alex Vidal, Wilson MacPherson, Jack Wanty and Will Hlidek. Tackles by Richard Miller and Jack Maude were petty especially when topped with a recovered fumble by Wilson MacPherson. A pass from Joe Cavanaugh to Michael Donius was good for a first down. And then another TD run by none other than Kevin Shea (sound familiar?) was followed by a successful 2pt conversion by Maxwell Schneider. Hingham 14, Barnstable 0. Graham Bates kicked to Barnstable which set up a pretty tackle by the threesome of Jett Littlefield, Wilson MacPherson and Richard Miller. Kevin Shea contributed a duo of tackles but nothing shook the earth quite like the tackle by Zach Passios. And Will Hlidek was in perfect position to recover yet another Barnstable fumble. On Hingham’s next possession, carries by Jack Maude and Kevin Shea were followed by a 30 yard carry by Maxwell Schneider. A spectacular pass to Kevin McGovern was good for Hingham’s 3rd TD of the game bringing the score to Hingham 20, Barnstable 0. Barnstable’s next attempt to score by thwarted by tackles from Michael Donius, Richard Miller and the “team”. Nothing compared to the crashing sound of a Passios tackle to end Barnstable’s futile attempt to score. Once again Hingham regained the ball and teased us with carries by Jack Maude, Jett Littlefield and Kevin Shea to end the first half of the game.

Zach Passios began the second half with a thunderous tackle. Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson and Kevin McGovern stopped Barnstable in their tracks. Wilson MacPherson stopped the next attempt on the line. Jett Littlefield came out of nowhere to push the next Barnstable play out of bounds. Another great tackle by McGovern, a group effort by Schofield, Vidal and Donius, and the tenacious efforts of Schneider forced Barnstable to yet again hand over the ball. Graham Bates tried his skills up the middle and Zach Passios was good enough for a first down. An impressive lateral pass to Kevin Shea was followed by hand-offs to Graham Bates and Zach Passios. Graham Bates was resolute in his endeavor to not be tackled as was evident in the many Barnstable players it took to finally pull him down. Although Hingham had to hand the ball to Barnstable on downs, it was only moments before Wilson MacPherson decided he wanted the ball back and he fought hard alongside Kevin Shea and Maxwell Schneider to take it back. Zach Passios ran for a few yards and then Kevin Shea decided he wanted another TD before game end and he ran at least another 20 yards to score his third TD of the game. Hingham 26, Bridgewater 0. Bridgewater tried unsuccessfully one last time to get their name on the board but Maxwell Schneider and Wilson MacPherson were not feeling generous and Zach Passios was not done making noise. Too bad Barnstable.

Sunday 9/27  4th Grade Tackle Football Battles Barnstable

Nick Beal, Zach Passios and Charlie Wichern represented the team as co-captains against Barnstable on a rainy Sunday at Lynch Field.

A 20 yard pass to Nick Beal got the crowd excited early. Hand-offs to Peyton Crosby, Tyler Murphy, Eric Rubino and Spencer Cassell positioned Eric Rubino for the first Hingham TD. Spencer Cassell followed up with the 2pt conversion. Hingham 8, Barnstable 0. On defense, Michael Freeman kicked to Barnstable followed by tackles by Freeman, Zach Devine and Shane Bick to end the first quarter. Tyler Murphy, Charlie Wichern, Michael Freeman, Nathaniel Bosnian, Nick Beal, and Shane Bick towed the line. More tackles by Zach Devine and Nate Bosnian frustrated Barnstable. A spectacular pass intrusion by Eric Rubino forced Barnstable to hand the ball over. The team of QB Richard Miller and center Zach Devine was assisted by the offensive line of Shane Bick, Michael Freeman, Peyton Crosby, Charlie Wichern and Nick Beal.  Plays to Payton Crosby, Eric Rubino and Spencer Cassell were not fruitful and a fumble on 4th down gave Barnstable the chance they needed. Nick Beal, Tyler Murphy, Shane Bick, Charlie Wichern, Nate Bosnian, and Michael Freeman braced on the line. Tackles by Nick Beal and Shane Bick were inspiring. But Barnstable took advantage of their position to score a touchdown. Spencer Cassell tackled to prevent the 2pt conversion. Hingham 8, Barnstable 6. On offense on Hingham’s next possession, a skillfully executed reverse was productive for 30 yards. Hand-offs to Tyler Murphy, Eric Rubino and Spencer Cassell brought the team to within 1 yard of their next TD but not before Hingham fumbled the ball and Barnstable took over on their 1 yard line to end the first half.

Spencer Cassell, Zach Devine, Nick Beal, Eric Rubino and Michael Donius were instrumental in forcing Barnstable to punt on their next possession to begin the 3rd quarter.   Michael Donius received the punt. Hand-offs to Spencer Cassell and Eric Rubino were stirring but ended in a pass interception and TD by Barnstable. Hingham 8, Barnstable 12. Eric Rubino received the kick from Barnstable and more running plays by Rubino and Cassell ended the 3rd quarter. On offense, Michael Freeman, Peyton Crosby, Shane Bick, Zach Devine, Nathaniel Bosnian, Charlie Wichern, Nick Beal and Eric Rubino fought hard to revive Hingham’s game but ended up having to hand the ball over to Barnstable. On Hingham’s next possession, they were determined to bring this game to a happy ending. Hand-offs to Rubino, Cassell and Crosby were followed by a valiant run by QB Richard Miller for a first down. Rubino appreciated the seriousness of Hingham’s position and drove for a healthy 20 yards and another first down to Barnstable’s 5 yard line with 43 seconds on the clock and the win on the line. Spencer Cassell brought that win to the 1 yard line with 17 seconds to go. And just as Richard Miller scored the winning touchdown………the play was called back on a technicality, not to be repeated. Hingham 8, Barnstable 12.

4TH GRADE TACKLE FOOTBALL TUMBLES TAUNTON 20-2

Everybody received a much coveted red helmet star after Sunday’s victory over Taunton. Jubilation was the emotion as the 4th grade team started their season off with a huge win over the Cubs. Could it be that Curtis Murphy, little brother of Tyler Murphy, and very adept at retrieving football Ts, is the lucky charm? Or is this team just GREAT?

Spencer Cassell, Richard Miller and Jack Maude represented the team as co-captains to begin the game in Taunton. Hingham chose to receive the ball.

First Quarter, on offense, Peyton Crosby received the kick and returned the ball for 7 yards. Center Zach Devine and QB Richard Miller got the game off to a quick start. Within two plays Hingham had their first TD of the season by Eric Rubino who ran the length of the field. A nice pass to Nick Beal for the two point conversion began what was to be an exhilarating game. On defense, Michael Freeman kicked the ball to Taunton. Tackles by Nick Beal, Spencer Cassell, Charlie Wichern, Zach Devine, Michael Freeman, Michael Donius, Peyton Crosby and Eric Rubino kept Taunton from scoring. On the line, Michael Freeman, Tyler Murphy, Shane Bick, Spencer Cassell, Joe Cavanaugh, Charlie Wichern and Alex Dietrich wouldn’t budge!

Second Quarter, on offense, Peyton Crosby, Tyler Murphy, and Eric Rubino all ran the ball for Hingham. A fumble in the end zone gave Taunton the only 2 points of the game. On defense, a kick by Michael Freeman and tackles by Peyton Crosby, Shane Bick and Michael Donius kept Taunton virtually at a stand still. On Hingham’s second possession Eric Rubino ran for a good 20 yards followed by Tyler Murphy for another 20 and a TD by Spencer Cassell made the score Hingham 14, Taunton 2. More tackles on defense by Spencer Cassell, Alex Dietrich, Jack Maude and Shane Bick ended the 1st half of the game.

The second half of the game was just as exciting as the first. On defense in the Third Quarter, Tyler Murphy, Shane Bick, Spencer Cassell, Nate Bosnian and Alex Dietrich earned their stars. Tackles galore by Peyton Crosby, Zach Devine, Michael Donius, Shane Bick and Alex Dietrich held Taunton. On offense, Michael Freeman, Peyton Crosby, Shane Bick, Zach Devine, Nate Bosnian, Charlie Wichern and Nick Beal did a spectacular job of protecting QB Richard Miller. Runs by Peyton Crosby, Eric Rubino and Tyler Murphy alongside a 10 yard completed pass to Nick Beal kept the momentum going.

In the Fourth Quarter of the game, several runs by Peyton Crosby and a brilliant catch by Michael Freeman had the crowd cheering. Tyler Murphy turned on the heat and drove for a Hingham 1st down. Two blockbuster runs up the middle by Spencer Cassell set up the third and last Hingham touchdown of the game by QB Richard Miller. On defense, another great kick by Michael Freeman followed by a hammer of a tackle by Zack Passios just stood to prove that Hingham wasn’t letting down their guard. Kevin Shea knocked down a Taunton pass attempt (1D), Zack Passios sacked the QB (2D), Maxwell Schneider slammed another Taunton running attempt (3D) and the fourth and final down (4D) by Kevin Shea ended the game. Hingham had pulled off a
20-2 victory!

09/19/09 4th Grade Tackle

4th Grade Tackle Football Takes Second Consecutive Win

Joe Cavanaugh, Maxwell Schneider and Wilson MacPherson represented the team as co-captains in the game against the Bridgewater Badgers on Saturday morning 9/19/09.

On offense, Jack Maude caught the kick-off to begin the game and on the very next play he also scored the first touchdown of the game. Hingham 6, Bridgewater 0. On defense, Graham Bates kicked off and the entire team contributed to the ensuing tackle/s.   Bridgewater turned over the ball on downs after the last tackle by Maxwell Schneider. Next on offense, a series of hand-offs and tosses from QB Joe Cavanaugh to Jett Littlefield, Kevin Shea, Maxwell Schneider and Jack Maude led the march up field and set up a beautiful 20 yard TD run by Kevin Shea to bring to score to Hingham 12, Bridgewater 0. Next on defense, Jack Maude tackled to stop the return. Alex Dietrich, Jack Wanty, center Will Hlidek, Wilson MacPherson, and Nick Schofield held strong on the defensive line. Tackles by Wilson Macpherson, Will Hlidek, Tyler Murphy, Jett Littlefield, Kevin Shea and Maxwell Schneider forced Bridgewater to hand the ball over once again to end the half.

Graham Bates kicked the ball to Bridgewater to start the 2nd half. Team tackles led by Wilson MacPherson, Graham Bates, Kevin Shea, and Alex Vidal kept Bridgewater scoreless. Hingham took over the ball and Jack Maude, Kevin Shea, Maxwell Schneider, and Jett Littlefield inched up the field. Bridgewater got the ball back on downs and the two teams shared the ball back and forth without incident. The Hingham defense of Alex Vidal, Jack Wanty, Charlie Wichern, Wilson MacPherson and Nate Bosnian celebrated their victory on the field as time ran out for Bridgewater. Final Score Hingham 12, Bridgewater 0.

4th Grade Tackle Football Takes on Duxbury

Eric Rubino, Nate Bosnian, and Shane Bick represented the team as co-captains in the game against the Duxbury Dragons in the lights on Saturday evening 9/19/09.

Peyton Crosby received the kickoff assisted by the offensive line of Zach Devine, Shane Bick, Spencer Cassell, Nate Bosnian, Charlie Wichern, Michael Donius and Michael Freeman. Handoff/s to Eric Rubino, Peyton Crosby and Tyler Murphy were productive but not enough to hold onto the ball. On defense, team tackles led by Spencer Cassell, Alex Dietrich, Peyton Crosby, Eric Rubino and Michael Donius were impressive but not enough to stop Duxbury from scoring 6 pts to end the 1st quarter.

On offense in the 2nd quarter Tyler Murphy received the ball followed by runs by Eric Rubino, QB Richard Miller, and a drive up the middle by Spencer Cassell but eventually Hingham turned the ball over on downs. On defense, Murphy, Shane Bick, Cassell, Charlie Wichern and Alex Dietrich were tough on the line. Tackles by Dietrich, Bick, Jack Maude and Cassell were effective at stopping Duxbury. Again on offense we saw Tyler Murphy turn on the speed. Spencer Cassell did what he did best with another crash through the middle. Rubino used his speed to gain up the side. An incredible silent QB sneak by Richard Miller was definitely the highlight of the game and good for 20 yards. Another pitch to Tyler Murphy and a toss to Peyton Crosby was good for a Hingham 1st down to end the 2nd half.

Michael Freeman kicked to Duxbury to start the 2nd half with the assistance of Tyler  Murphy, Shane Bick, Spencer Cassell, Charlie Wichern and Alex Dietrich. Spencer Cassell was the hero this time by tackling the receiver on the first play and then ripping the ball out of Duxbury’s hand and dashing for the Duxbury 30 yard line on the second play. The offense of Michael Freeman, Zach Devine, Nate Bosnian, Charlie Wichern, Nick Beal and Shane Bick were ready to capitalize on Cassell’s momentum. Tyler Murphy saw another big gain. Spencer Cassell tore up the middle. Nice blocking on the line contributed to more gains by Peyton Crosby, Tyler Murphy and Eric Rubino. A great pass to Nick Beal had Hingham well within scoring distance. The ball was handed to none other than Spencer Cassell who had already proved he could drive a wedge up the middle and he dutifully complied to put Hingham on the scoreboard. Eric Rubino added to the excitement by adding 2 points on the conversion. The score was now Hingham 8, Duxbury 6. But just when you thought things couldn’t get better, a kick to Duxbury by Michael Freeman resulted in a turnover when Freeman recovered his own kick. Unfortunately Hingham was not able to capitalize on this error and turned the ball back over to Duxbury. Although the defense was strong with tackles by Freeman and Crosby, Duxbury managed to score a TD and a 2 pt conversion and took the lead 14-8. Hingham’s last possession of the game was truly a heroic attempt. Eric Rubino, Spencer Cassell, Peyton Crosby and Tyler Murphy all did their best to drive into Duxbury territory but in the end, it was Duxbury who triumphed.
